Felix Unger
Felix Unger (born in 1946, Klagenfurt, Austria) is one of the leading heart specialists in the world, he is also president of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and president of the Alma Mater Europaea.〔()〕 In 1986 he performed the first artificial heart transplantation in Europe.〔("New Artificial Heart is Tried" ), United Press International in ''The New York Times'', December 16, 1986.〕 ==Life==
Unger studied medicine at University of Vienna, where he graduated in 1971. After graduation he was practicing at University Clinic for Cardiology in Vienna (1971, 1972) and at the local University Surgical Clinic (1972–1977) and in 1975 as a researcher in the field of Cardiovascular medicine in Houston, Cleveland and Salt Lake City in USA. In the year of 1978, he became Associate professor and later Full surgical professor. He got his Ph.D in 1978. In Salt Lake City, he invented Ellipsoidherz that he later used for the first implantation of artificial heart in 1986. In the year 1990, he founded together with kardinal König and prof. Lobkowitz the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, which at the moment has 1500 members. Between the years of 1985 and 2011 he was the leader of University Clinic for cardiac surgery in Salzburg, since 2001, he is the president of European Institute of Health. Prof. Unger is also a member of most important scientific associations, as well as a number of academies of science: a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Latvia, Slovenia and Serbia as well as a regular member of the German Leopoldina, Slovakia and the New York Academy of Sciences and the world and the Montenegrin Academy of sciences and Arts.〔()〕
